Grant Making- Why We’re Here

The second year of a new Communityworks grant program has been announced by Hollice Clark, Chair of the Grants Committee of the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley. The program in 2007 provided a total of $25,000 in grants to 10 different local non-profit agencies. A total of $25,000 will be available for the 2008 grant program. Grants are available in the focus areas of Early Childhood Education, Workforce Development, and Land Use & Protection.

The goal of the Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in Kankakee County by supporting needs that are not being met. To receive a grant application an organization should contact the Foundation indicating its interest. In addition to the application, the organization will be sent a list of guidelines, which the Foundation considers when determining whether an organization is eligible to apply or should receive support.

Requests are reviewed and evaluated by the Grants Committee with the Board of Directors making the final grant determination. Because the Foundation has a limited undesignated grant-making fund and cannot finance all the requests it receives, the Grants Committee and the Board of Directors have developed the following general policies and considerations.

  • Other than designated grants or grants made to educational institutions through scholarship funds, grants are made only to those nonprofit organizations and programs operating in Kankakee County.
  • Grants are given primarily to organizations with a charitable 501(c)(3) classification by the Internal Revenue Service.
  • Grants are made for one year at a time. When circumstances justify it, a commitment may be made to a project for a longer period.
  • Grant applications should follow the grant application instructions. In general, the application instructions call for a project description, including the purpose and goals of the project, as well as a proposed budget with supporting materials.
  • The evaluation process may include an on-site visitation.
  • There is one grant period each year.
  • Because it is necessary to determine where grant dollars should be placed to have the greatest impact on the needs and growth of the community, the Board of Directors has also defined the role and priorities of the Community Foundation of Kankakee River Valley.

They are:

  • To assist existing agencies to better respond to the needs of the community.
  • To maintain both a proactive focus for grant dollars and the ability to respond to creative ideas from grant seekers.
  • To encourage programs that enhance cooperation and collaboration among institutions within the area, and
  • To leverage funds through the use of “seed money, “match” and “challenge” grants.
